Chapter 27

Bran stood a few strides away from the portal, watching as his party stepped into it.

Alaro, Lara, and Patrick had become more than just friends to him. They were like family. He felt a sharp emptiness in his gut as they left him behind, heading home to the Mortal Realm. Part of him wanted to go with them. He had barely been in the Worldbreaker Realm for a week, but he had been homesick since the moment he had met their king and been thrown in that cell.

The captain—Jakarris—laid a hand on Bran’s shoulder. For a moment, the man’s grip had been unusually tight, though it quickly loosened. “You’re doing the right thing, Bran.”

Bran nodded sharply. “I know,” he said. Though he wasn’t as sure as he had been. He wanted to uplift his friends, make them as strong as they possibly could be. After the last of them, Patrick, had stepped through the portal, Bran walked up to it, laying a hand on the door’s frame. He shut his eyes, connecting to the portal, then deactivated it. He kept his eyes closed, remaining where he was, leaning against the portal. “You said they had potential. That they could be much stronger than they are.” Bran swallowed. “Were you lying?”

There was a short silence. “I wasn’t lying. They share our blood, Bran. Human summoners are more capable than they realize, they have simply forgotten that. That’s why Goltran will go after them. He is worried you will lead them to his defeat.”

Bran opened his eyes and turned to face Jakarris. “What do I have to do? How to I become strong enough to defeat the king?”

Jakarris tilted his head up. “You do everything I tell you to.” His gaze was hard. Unyielding. “No matter what.”

Bran stared back at the man, his gaze just as hard and unyielding. He nodded. “No matter what.”

The sides of the captain’s mouth twitched upward, as they often did, though the smile never quite met the man’s face. “Summon your monsters. Your training begins now.”

Bran did as the man instructed. There were other things on his mind. He remembered all the people in the audience at the arena. The ones who had been silent. The ones who had stood for him. He wondered what would happen to them. Would the king suspect they were believers? Detractors? Would they be punished, or was his rule too tenuous for him to take such action against his own people when the Promised One had appeared?

He will not show them mercy. He will round up my supporters, and he will punish them. Bran wasn’t sure how he knew, but he knew. The king would probably throw them into the arena for one deathmatch after the other. I need to be strong enough to return. Strong enough to defeat him.

The mana reserves of all his monsters had regenerated to their fullest. He summoned the Shadow Lynx, Demon Griffin, Umbra Lion, and the Giant Sand Worm. Once the four monsters appeared, he looked down at the eighth crystal.
